“A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is a caring, sharing person inside” -Denis Waitley

Snapshot_007Long Island has survived the blizzard. I am on my second cup of coffee and watching the local news for road conditions trying to decide if I will go to work or not. At 5 am, I called in to my employer to say that due to the weather I will not be in today, but I feel like I have to show up for some God forsaken reason. As if my presence would make a difference. I suppose my Parents would be proud of the “work ethic” they have instilled in me and my siblings. Every blizzard, or extenuating circumstances would be an opportunity for them to drill it into our heads that responsibility starts within ones self and to think of others first. Team work was above all the most important thing to getting things “done”. On a day like today, Dad would of woke each of us up before the sun came up ” get dressed we have work to do”. All four of us would drag our butts to the bathroom where we would fight over who gets to go in first, then race to get dressed and be first to meet at the front door to commence on the activity of clearing our triple sized driveway so that Dad could get to work. Getting Dad to work seemed to be the utmost priority in our lives. After, we were rewarded with a warm feast from Mom. We could smell the bacon cooking from the kitchen while we were at the finishing line of completing the task at hand. She was a smart lady my Mom. Start cooking when it looks like we all might give up.

Snapshot_009If the snow was really deep Dad would then take us snow riding at the local golf course. Today, the golf course has made it impossible for families to sleigh ride there, but when we were growing up it was the place to be and be seen. Most families had at least 3 kids if not more like us, we were 4. Healthy competition was sure to be part of the day against one family to the other. My Dad, didn’t have a cell phone in his hand but he actually “played” with us up and down those hills. I remember laughing so hard, being absolutely frozen wet and cold yet still, I would beg to stay. This tradition I kept when it came to my two children and I hope that they will do the same for their families. I miss my Dad and all his “lessons of life” but I feel immensely fortunate to have had those experiences that make me the woman I am today. I’m still not going to work, but I did think about it, and that should count towards something. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention you should call your Parents and make sure they are OK today, because after all, responsibility starts with you. Now I’m going to call my Mom.  Until next time…
